BABIES, BABOONS AND BONES!

International Volunteering for Fun and Focus

I am pleased to introduce Silvia who wiggled her way on to my lap and into my heart in Romania.  Residing in a failure-to-thrive clinic with 32 other children under the age of five, Silvia, with lungs like a true opera diva, made her presence known from day one.  Three weeks wasn’t near long enough for the cuddling, patty cake and holding the babies.

Eight-week old Icarus was one of 300 baboons at the CARE rehabilitation center in South Africa.  Bottles, diapers, cutting up fruit and vegetables, and socialization with other baboons and volunteers were the order of the day. You knew you had been accepted when they stopped biting and fell asleep in your lap.  Challenging as only toddlers can be, I learned so much about myself and how I approach the world.

Step back in time to ancient Thailand and explore early civilization and cultures with me.  Never in my wildest dreams did I ever expect to be on an archaeological dig! Even more exciting, I actually got to gently handle some of the more than 100 artifacts unearthed daily.  I enjoyed the experience so much, I went back a second time a year later for the final dig at the site.

What, you may ask, do babies, baboons and bones have in common? They were simply the top three volunteer placements that inspired me to get off my couch and out into the world.  While I worked at 12 different volunteer sites, by the end of the presentation, I am sure you will see why these were my top three!
